LADY PIONEERS WIN FIFTH AND SIXTH STRAIGHT GAMES

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH After a slow start, the Alfred State women’s basketball team raced past Roberts Wesleyan JV 70-45 in a non-conference tilt.  The Raiders jumped out to a 12-7 lead but the Pioneers answered with a 32 to 8 run to close out the half.
Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) led the Pioneers with 19 points and nine rebounds.  Amie Brooks (Pavilion) finished with 15 while Nuri Bey (Bronx/HS of Computers & Technology) had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.   Carriola Chambers (Manhattan/Facing History) had a solid all-around game with six points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and six steals.
The Lady Pioneers held a 70 to 52 advantage on the boards and a 33 to 20 advantage on the offensive boards. Alfred State forced the Raiders into 24 turnovers.
Christina Healy led the Raiders with 17 points.

SATURDAY, FEBUARY 18TH Looking for their sixth straight win, the Lady Pioneers took on Lakeland CC. The Lakers opened strongly and took an early 6-3 lead. But the Lady Pioneers fought back. By the 7:58 mark of the first half, Alfred State led 20-14 w/remaining. ASC stayed ahead as the half ended, though the LCC Lakers closed a ten-point gap to go into halftime down only by six, 32-26. Amie Brooks led the scoring in the first half with 10 points while Haley Witchella had seven. In the first five minutes of the second half, the Lakers caught and passed ASC, 33-32; but then the Lady Pioneers went on a 14-0 run and lead 46-33. A later 27-0 run gave the Pioneers a big lead of 69-44 with 7:04 remaining. The Lady Lakers did not give up, but they were unable to catch the speeding Pioneers. The final was Alfred State 79 Lakeland CC 60.
