DONATING BLOOD

Lila Campiz

Each year, numerous blood drives are hosted on our campus. Sometimes sports team host one and other times it is hosted by one of the Greek Fraternity’s Pi Rho Zeta. Did you know that more than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day? Or that one donation can help save the lives of up to three people? The next blood drive will be December 4th from 11am to 5pm in the Pioneer Lounge. I’ve been approached by an Alfred State student who is an intern for the American Red Cross. By announcing the Blood Drive in advance, they hope it could greatly increase student donor turn-out by spreading word-of-mouth to a larger range of students.

Students who are interested should know that before donating blood you must be healthy, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110lbs. Do you know what the Red Cross does with your blood? The blood will be delivered to a Red Cross blood component laboratory where it is processed into several components (red blood cells, plasma, platelets and/or cryoprecipitate)

Why Donate Blood?
* Some give blood because we were asked by a friend.
* Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day.
* Some believe it is the right thing we do.
