Alfred State defeated Hudson Valley Vikings 30-24 in their final game of the season. The victory makes The Pioneers record 5- 4. This is Alfred State’s eighth .500 or better season since Head Coach Mick Caba has been in tenure.
“I am thrilled about the team win. We played the ultimate team performance to come up with a final win. It’s thrilling to see the sophomores become the only class to leave with back to back winning seasons and leave with a region runner up in their back pocket. It’s a great spring board for us to be able to go into the next year in the NCAA division III coming off back to back winning seasons,” Coach Caba said.
Turnovers and great plays had a major role in the victory for the Pioneers.
Alfred was on the board under five minutes when Sammy Diaz ran eight yards for Pioneers first touchdown during their first possession. A Vikings rush play resulted in a fumble, recovered by Alonzo Joyner giving Pioneers a great starting field possession. One play later Joey Frendo hit a thirty yard pass completion to Colton Caldwell for Alfred’s second touchdown.
Late in the second half another turnover occurred when Brent Rice blocked a punt which was recovered by Carl Williams in the end zone making it 22-8 at half time.
In the third quarter once again The Vikings fumbled, and Michael Gibson recovered it. Joey Frendo hit a twenty five yard pass to Colton Caldwell for a score. Alfred State scored an unusual two point conversion when the point after kick was blocked, but Danny Napoliomello alertly caught the ball and ran it in.
Vikings had two chances with the ball but could not put the tying points on the board. The game ended when Hudson Valley turned the ball over for the 6th time.
Alonzo Joyner led the defense with 11 tackles, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. Michael Gibson had seven tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery and Thomas Daniels had six tackles, three sacks, and also recovered a fumble.
Joey Frendo was 12 of 27 for 140 yards and two touchdown passes. Colton Caldwell caught five passes for a total of 83 yards and two scores. Dileel Bartley rushed for a total of 60 yards on 16 carries.
The Pioneers defense was impressive forcing six fumbles and one interception. Alfred State had a total of 269 yards while the Vikings had only 164.
